soil2The National Soil Resources Institute is offering free access to “Soilscapes”, a 1:250,000 soil dataset covering England and Wales. It provides an excellent basis for understanding many of the environmental conditions affecting any site in England or Wales and the reports are useful for geographers, geologists, archaeologists, environmental scientists, biologists, ecologists and more.

In January, Intute: Health and Life Sciences (HLS) will be introducing a change to the presentation of subject headings on the HLS Home Page. The Bioresearch and Natural History headings will be combined into a single new heading: Biological Sciences.

The content has been combined and is cross searchable but the browse structure will remain the same (with some minor modifications). These changes have been informed by user feedback and an Advisory Group including academics and a librarian in the subject area and the Higher Education Academy for Bioscience. (more…)

The Habitable Planet is a multimedia course for high school teachers and adult learners interested in studying environmental science. The Web site provides access to course content and activities developed by leading scientists and researchers in the field.

Planet Earth is a free quarterly magazine published by NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) which is “aimed at non-specialists with an interest in the sciences of the environment”. The current issue is available in full text online, and details are given of how to subscribe (free). Although the magazine is environmental in outlook, it contains many articles relevent to geographers such as the impact of climate change, air pollution, and other spatially related topics impacting on societies and their use of the environment.

Biology Browser is a site containing links to free resources provided by BIOSIS (produced by Thompson Scientific), including the Nomenclature Glossary for Zoology, the Zoological Record Thesaurus, and more. There are also links to other high-quality free resources in the biological sciences.

Engage is designed to help science undergraduate students with advice and assistance on the most important aspects of scientific research.  It includes information on research in general, statistical analyses, worked examples and help sheets. There are numerous links to external sites offering a vast experience in the practice and results of scientific research.

The Intute Environment Gateway provides free access to high quality resources on the Internet. It contains over 3,000 records which describe lecture notes, journals, government publications, non-profit organisation sites, and other websites under headings such as : Agriculture and the Environment, Biodiversity and Conservation, Climate and Environment, Energy and Resources, Environmental Economics, Environmental Law and Legislation, Environmental Management, Environmental Policy, Landscapes and Landscape Architecture, Pollution Science, and Waste Management.

Environment web resources provides a comprehensive list of environmental resources available on the World Wide Web. It is divided into 27 sub-sections that include: organisations; climate and climate change; environmental management; environmental law; rural and urban planning and policy. These are submitted to an online, peer reviewed journal – Conservation Evidence - which is freely available in html and in PDF formats. Also available are summaries of reports and published papers relating to conservation interventions. The site’s database can be searched or browsed.
