Don’t forget to back up your work! December 6, 2012
Posted by Jess in All categories.add a comment
Things go wrong with PCs and even though this doesn’t happen often it’s best to be safe, so make sure you back up your work somewhere other than the PC you’re using, such as an memory stick or the 7GB Windows Live SkyDrive that we provide for you – this is an online file storage area, so once something is saved here you can access it from wherever you are.
Don’t forget your memory sticks when you leave though, we’ve been picking them up all over the place!
And to access your SkyDrive, just login via the student portal (students.worc.ac.uk).

NEW HELP DESK
In response to student feedback we’re opened a ‘study and research help desk’ on Level 3, by the lifts in The Hive. The desk is staffed 10am-7pm Monday to Friday & 10-5 Saturday.
MORE PCs
Last week we installed extra PCs on level 4, as well as additional power for laptops.
MORE SILENT STUDY SPACE
All meeting rooms at The Hive have been booked out for student silent study use for the period between 26th November and 16th December.
This gives extra designated space for students in the busy run up to the Christmas break.
Just go in and use the room when you want. A few bookings may be in place but we have kept these to a minimum. See this map for full details on where to find all of the meeting rooms.
A similar block booking has been made for next May before the Independent Study deadline.

Essential ICT Maintenance this Sunday November 2, 2012
Posted by Jess in All categories.add a comment
Several ICT services will be offline for a period of 3 hours on Sunday 4th November between 9am and midday due to essential maintenance. These include but are not limited to:
- Remote Access to E-Resources (access will still be available on University campuses and at the Hive via the Hive website)
- Digitised articles and materials
- Remote Access to E-Books in the Library Catalogue (other Library Catalogue functionality will be affected only for a short period of up to 45 minutes during which time you may be unable to access your Library Account or place Reservations).
- The Summon service may be affected for a few minutes during the morning.
As always we will endeavour to minimise the outages, however all services will continue to be at risk until 4:30pm as we continue testing and carry out additional work.
Note: This will not impact internet connectivity, wireless network or library catalogue machines at The Hive, however University of Worcester services accessed from The Hive will be at risk as per the above schedule.
Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience.
Want to use your laptop on campus? November 1, 2012

No problem.
Wireless network is available across all UW campuses; just connect to ‘UW_Wireless’. If you’re having trouble, open your browser and head to www.bsc2.worc.ac.uk and login using your usual university credentials.
You can plug your laptop into available power sockets, but we don’t want any accidents so avoid trailing cables, and please don’t unplug other equipment (there are plenty of sockets so you shouldn’t need to anyway).
Laptops should only be connected to UW power outlets if they have been PAT tested and have a valid sticker, so make sure yours is up-to-date.
Find a member of staff if you need a hand using your laptop on campus.
Help with anything ICT-related… October 30, 2012
Posted by Jess in All categories.add a comment
There are four ways to get ICT help:
- Find a member of staff in The Hive or at the Helpdesk in the Peirson Centre.
- Log a problem or request through the portal – www.eris.worc.ac.uk/studentpages
- Via email – helpdesk@worc.ac.uk
- By phone – 01905 857500
And there’s now support out of hours, just call the normal ICT helpdesk phone number. This service runs from 5pm-9am Monday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.
If your problem is that the PC you’re using is faulty, then you can report this via text. Just text the word REPORT followed by the machine ID to 80081.
